Pattern making tutorial-how to draw a princess line
Drawing a princess line is part of our beginners pattern making classes.
Here is a summary of ‘how to proceed” with step by instructions and pictures. We choose to show a princess line cut into the armhole but it could be done into the shoulder seam or the neckline. Let’s start with the most obvious princess line cut : into the armhole.
- bodice block
- draw the princess lines into the armholes
- pivot front bust dart
- extend back shoulder dart
- draw a cutting line into back armhole
- pivot shoulder dart into armhole
- redraw the shoulder seam into a straight line
- draw a second princess line from top of shoulder dart to second leg of waist dart (in green)
- separte the 4 pieces
- extend the front apex (3 mm minimum) to give ease at bust
- redraw the curves
- seam allowance and notch for easy sewing
